Skin Issues

hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a skin term referring to when patches of the skin become darker in color than the normal, surrounding skin. This discoloration can affect any race, ethnicity, or skin tone. The three common types of hyperpigmentation are melasma, sunspots, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Melasma is believed to be caused by hormonal changes such as pregnancy or menopause. Sunspots or “liver spots” are a common form of hyperpigmentation caused by years of excess sun exposure. Following an injury or inflammation to the skin, you may experience post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. A cause of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation could be something as common as acne.

Some risk factors are medications that increase your sensitivity to light or skin trauma such as a burn. In all cases, increased sun exposure puts you at greater risk for discoloration making sunscreen your best friend for prevention. A physical, SPF 30 to SPF 50, broad spectrum sunscreen is ideal. There are also some topical treatments, facial peels, and dermabrasions we provide at our clinic that can help lighten discolored skin.

If you notice an abnormally discolored mole or hyperpigmented spot, please contact your healthcare provider or come in for an evaluation.
